TEEN POETRY CONTEST ENTRIES

"Waiting for Summer"
By Carolyn M.
Grade 5

Although Spring has just started, we haven't thought of doves, flowers, and birds.
We haven't thought of the awaiting of Spring that we should think of,
because by Summer, we'll be bracing for harsh Winters.

We think of Fall as a boring, breezy season.
We want Spring, where we get the best weather.
We don't think.
Think of brutally hot weather, so everyone is waiting for Summer.

We think only of swimming pools, and frisbees.
Blue Jay calls, and vacations.
Think original, and make the most out of Summer.
Though we should not be waiting for Summer, but bracing ourselves.

Locked Body but Free Mind
There are no walls, there are no bolts, no locks anyone can put on people's minds.
People can force me to do whatever they want, but they will never see how I think.
One thing that separates people from each other is how they think.  A person has the right to think any way they want.

Imagination helps open thoughts.  All people have equal rights.  Prejudice took away Anne's rights during World War II.  The way some people think is wrong.  You may be able to change how they act but taught may forever remain the same.

"True Love"
By Martin Z.
Grade 8

True Love is very rare
Requiring dedication
It's a true beauty

Rose petals falling,
leaves blowing through the wind.

Flowers playing,
incessantly teasing one another.

All one day to be,
trampled, cut or burned.

Finally forgotten.

"Roses"
By Sophia S.
Grade 3

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
U are my friend,
and you're cool!

"Colors"
By Sophia S.
Grade 3

The colors live between black and white,
in a land that we know best by sight.

But knowing best isn't everything,
for colors dance and sing, and laugh.

Colors cry turn off the light,
and colors die.

And they make you feel every feeling there is,
from the grumpiest grump to the fizziest fizz.

And you and I know well,
each has a taste and each has a smell.

And each has a wonderful story to tell...

"Dogs"
By Sophia S.

I am a thing,
my name rhymes with hog.

I bark a lot,
and wag my tail.

I am a Dog.

"Cats"
By Sophia S.
Grade 3

I am a thing,
my name rhymes with bat.

I get chased by dogs,
and purr.

I am a cat.
